This piece is inspired by the verse Matthew 5:30. While the severed hand is used to depict the gravity and consequence of sin, the bitten apple represents the action of sin. The small lines (cross-hatching) I used to detail and shade the hand, rather than my usual hyperrealism, symbolize the imperfection of humanity. When we choose to act in disobedience to what we know is true, there is also a consequence we are choosing to bear, whether we know it or not. In biblical times, this was a physical punishment. We know now that though sin may not cause pain in this world, if there is no repentance, there will be worse in the future.
