This piece is inspired by the 1940 Doll Test (documented in 1947) by psychologists Dr. Kenneth Clark and Dr. Mamie Clark. This study was substantial in showing how warped the minds of our youth were because of whom the world had presented to them as superior. Shown on the TV is the influential show, “A Different World”, which focused on showcasing black individuals as not just laborers but real and successful individuals. Beside the TV are VHS tapes with iconic movies of the time representing black culture positively. The crowned African American doll in the little girl's arm represents newfound love and admiration for those who look like her. On the other hand, the white doll that has been tossed aside illustrates how media representation has reformed a preadolescent mind once skewed by society. Without positive representation, it is easy for children to view themselves negatively despite who they truly are. Therefore, we must set not only good but great examples for those younger than us and continue to stress the importance of positive influences.

But wait, there's more...
