An Unfaithful Death [Print]

This surrealist-type piece, inspired by the Parable of the Fig Tree (Luke 13:6–9), uses a fig tree to symbolize lukewarm faith. On one side, the tree bears leaves and fruit; however, on the other, it is barren. This contrast is meant to depict the act of lukewarmness: claiming to obey Jesus but giving him only a portion of our lives and the rest to the world. The tree's roots strangle the heart, illustrating the inevitable death that comes when we choose our flesh over the Father. What the world offers is incomparable to the love of Jesus Christ, but the ties we form to worldly things are hard to let go. Otherwise, we’d break habits easily. However, when we relinquish our sins and temptations to God, we are depending not only on OUR strength, but on God, who makes us new in Christ.
